When I was a kid: Lauren Humphrey

In our new series “WHEN I WAS A KID” we ask our contributors and friends about what inspired them as children, as there is nothing like childhood inspiration to fire up Monday morning imagination.

This week, it is the turn of Studio Anorak's Lauren Humphrey to inspire us with her weird and wonderful childhood memories.

When I was a kid, I used to collect... soaps. I particularly loved the animal shaped ones from The Body Shop and carried them with me everywhere in my Princess Jasmine backpack. For some reason the smell and feel of them was relaxing to me. I still have LOADS of soaps in my bathroom cupboard.

When I was a kid, I used to watch... 'Dinosaurs' - an american family sitcom - a bit like the Simpsons, but with people in dinosaur costumes. I can remember watching it with a cup of milk before bed when I was staying at my Aunty Claire's house with my cousins.

When I was a kid, I used to dream about... something I called the 'tickly back monster'. He used to appear at any time in my dreams and tickle me until I woke up. Horrible. I believed that if I slept under the covers that he wouldn't come, but it didn't really work.

When I was a kid, I used to read a book... called 'The Giggler Treatment'. It was my favourite book (and probably one of the only books I ever read as a kid) and it was about these creatures that would punish mean parents by putting dog poo in their pathways. Such a silly story but I loved it!

Now I am... an illustrator who still loves soaps, still loves watching Dinosaurs, and hasn't had a 'tickly back monster' visit my dreams in years. I live in London and am currently working on my own children's picture book.

Lauren has recently drawn a new section in Anorak's current edition called Food is Fun and has created hundreds of beautiful illustrations for Green Man Festival
