When I was a kid: Rob Flowers

In our new series “WHEN I WAS A KID” we ask our contributors and friends about what inspired them as children, as there is nothing like childhood memories to fire up our imagination.

This week, it is the turn of Studio Anorak's Rob Flowers, whose psychedelic illustrations take inspiration from 80s McDonald ads and burgers.

When I was a kid ..

I used to collect toys. Actually I still do that loads. (See image below!)

I used to watch… You’ve Been Framed. I was obsessed with it as a kid. I’ve always found other people’s misfortune hilarious.

I used to dream… about eating a pineapple. It was an reoccurring dream I had for about 3 years from the age of 11-13.

I used to read…. In the Night Kitchen over and over again. I blame Maurice Sendak for my bread obsession.

Now I… still do pretty much all of those things.

Join us on the 23rd and 24th April at the Truman Brewery for D&AD Festival to play with Rob Flowers's Magic Wall and make some of his special paper costumes. Rob and I will also be doing a talk about childhood creativity on the 23rd April at 130pm. Hope to see you there!
